UPOPOY

What Is Upopoy (National Ainu Museum and Park)?

Upopoy is a national center for the revitalization and development of Ainu culture, located on the shore of Lake Poroto in the town of Shiraoi. It opened in 2020. “Upopoy” means “singing together in a large group” in the Ainu language.

It is made up of the National Ainu Museum, the National Ainu Park and a memorial site. Here you can learn about the history and culture of the Ainu, the Indigenous people of Hokkaido, through both exhibitions and hands-on experiences.

National Ainu Museum

A national museum dedicated to Ainu history and culture. Through everyday tools, clothing and other exhibits, it presents the culture from the Ainu people’s own perspective.

Exhibitions & experiences

In the National Ainu Park you can watch performances such as traditional Ainu dance, walk through a kotan (village) of traditional houses, and join programs that introduce the culture.

Nature around Lake Poroto

Upopoy sits between a lake and forest. After the exhibits, take some time to stroll along the lakeshore.

Why visit on a Hokkaido trip

Many place names and landscapes in Hokkaido are connected to Ainu culture. Visiting early in your trip may change how you see the rest of Hokkaido.

SHIRAOI

Lunch by the Sea in Shiraoi

Shiraoi is a coastal town facing the Pacific Ocean. After learning about Ainu culture at Upopoy, Muto recommends enjoying a meal with a view of the sea.

Kita no Lamp-tei

A charcoal-grill restaurant in Takeura, Shiraoi, right in front of the Pacific Ocean. You grill seafood and meat yourself over charcoal while looking out at the sea. Muto recommends it for its “unbeatable location” — the food and the view go together.

Visit Upopoy in the morning and have lunch at Kita no Lamp-tei: a simple way to enjoy both Shiraoi’s culture and its coastline in one day.

Yes. We can meet you at New Chitose Airport and drive you to Upopoy. Besides the model plans on this page, we also accept transfers to Upopoy only. For requests other than the model plans, we will quote a fare based on your pickup point, date, number of passengers and so on.
Can I enjoy Upopoy and Shiraoi food on the same day?
Yes. All the model plans on this page cover Upopoy and a meal or sightseeing in Shiraoi in one day. Let us know how much time you would like at each.
Will the car wait while we sightsee?
