The World Heritage site of Shiretoko has one of the world's highest densities of brown bears. Popular cruise tours let you observe bears from the water, keeping a safe distance from shore.
Notsuke Peninsula (Spotted Seals)
Japan's largest sand spit, the Notsuke Peninsula, is home to spotted seals living in its bay. In summer, sightseeing boats run seal-watching cruises as well.
Kushiro Wetlands / Eastern Hokkaido (Red-Crowned Cranes)
The area around the Kushiro Wetlands is the only confirmed nesting ground of the red-crowned crane in the world. Designated a Special Natural Monument of Japan, you can watch these birds against a backdrop of snow in winter.

Encountering wildlife is a popular experience for kids too. Since these are wild animals, basic etiquette matters — don't get too close, and never feed them. In brown bear territory especially, always follow your guide's instructions.

Shiretoko, the Notsuke Peninsula, and the Kushiro Wetlands, on the other hand, are far from New Chitose Airport and Sapporo, and aren't realistic as a day trip round-trip.
Near Sapporo / New Chitose Airport (Lake Shikotsu, Lake Toya, etc.)
By car or taxi: About 1–2 hours from New Chitose Airport or Sapporo. A day-trip transfer combined with other activities is possible.
Shiretoko / Notsuke Peninsula / Kushiro Wetlands (Eastern Hokkaido)
By plane: Flying into Memanbetsu, Nakashibetsu, or Kushiro Airport is the usual route.
By taxi: Not suited to a day-trip transfer from New Chitose Airport or Sapporo, but we're happy to discuss a multi-day private charter touring eastern Hokkaido.
