Why Go Birdwatching in Hokkaido

You can witness large-scale spectacles: the red-crowned crane, a Special Natural Monument of Japan; the Steller's sea eagle, Japan's largest bird of prey; and flocks of tens of thousands of greater white-fronted geese arriving together.
Recommended Birdwatching Areas
Lake Miyajima (Bibai)
A relatively easy destination, about an hour's drive from Sapporo. In spring and autumn, over 60,000 greater white-fronted geese stop here, and the sight of them all taking flight together around sunrise is breathtaking.
Kushiro Wetlands / Eastern Hokkaido
The area around the Kushiro Wetlands is the only confirmed nesting ground of the red-crowned crane in the world. In winter, you can watch these red-crested birds against a backdrop of snow.
Rausu / Shiretoko
In winter, Steller's and white-tailed sea eagles arrive from Russia and gather along the coastline near Rausu. At the February peak, as many as around 1,000 can arrive at once — a sight that's rare even by world standards.

Kushiro Wetlands / Rausu (Eastern Hokkaido)
By plane: Flying into Kushiro Airport or Nakashibetsu Airport is the usual route.
