Hokkaido SUP Guide | Best Lakes for Stand-Up Paddleboarding

SUP (stand-up paddleboarding) is a water sport where you paddle while standing on a board. Hokkaido offers plenty of photogenic spots, from Lake Shikotsu — among the clearest lakes in Japan — to Shakotan, home to a mystical "blue cave." This guide covers the top areas, typical pricing, best seasons, and how to get there.

SUP involves balancing while standing on the board, but beginners can start kneeling or sitting until they get comfortable. Most people pick up the basics after a short lesson, even without any athletic background. On calm days, Hokkaido's lakes turn mirror-smooth, reflecting the surrounding mountains.

In exceptionally clear lakes like Shikotsu, you can sometimes spot fish swimming beneath your board — a favorite for travelers chasing a great photo.

Lake Shikotsu (Chitose)

Hokkaido's most established SUP destination, with the largest number of operators. The lake has at times been certified as Japan's clearest, and some operators offer private plans for children as young as around 4. Its easy access from New Chitose Airport and Sapporo adds to its popularity.

Shakotan & Otaru

Known for the crystal-clear waters called "Shakotan Blue" and "Otaru Blue," this area is ideal for sea SUP. Some tours even take you to a mystical "blue cave" by paddleboard — a popular summer draw.

Niseko (Shiribetsu River)

Best known for rafting, the Shiribetsu River also has gentle stretches used for relaxed river SUP tours, letting you paddle along while taking in views of Mt. Yotei.

Most areas run their main season from May through October. In midsummer, warmer water makes it easier for first-timers and families with children. For sea SUP around Shakotan and Otaru, summer's calmer seas are especially recommended.

SeasonWhat to Expect

You'll get a lesson on standing and paddling before heading out, so no experience is required. Most tours have you start kneeling or seated, then stand up once you're comfortable.

Some tours accept children from around age 4 at Lake Shikotsu, and around age 6 at Lake Toya. Tandem plans, where a child rides on the same board as a parent, are also available — making this an easy activity to enjoy as a family with young children.
