The Complete Hokkaido Rafting Guide | Pricing, Season & Access by Area

Hokkaido is home to rafting spots that suit everyone from beginners to families — the Shiribetsu River in Niseko with views of Mt. Yotei, the Sorachi River in Furano, and the mighty Tokachi River, among others. This guide organizes what makes each area unique, typical pricing, the best season, and how to get there — everything worth knowing before your trip.

Rafting means paddling down a river together with your group in a large inflatable boat. Hokkaido's clear rivers, fed by melting snow, keep steady water levels even in summer, and you can take in sweeping views of Daisetsuzan or Mt. Yotei along the way. Beyond the thrill of the rapids, calmer stretches let you swim or jump off the boat — making it a great water-play activity too.

A guide accompanies you and leads the course, so it's a reassuring choice even if you're not particularly athletic or this is your first trip to Hokkaido.

Niseko (Shiribetsu River)

Home to the largest number of operators in Hokkaido, this area centers on the Shiribetsu River, known for its clear water, with courses that run past views of Mt. Yotei. You'll find both family-friendly courses for all ages and more active courses with genuine rapids.

Furano / Biei Area (Sorachi, Chubetsu & Mu Rivers)

Centered on the Sorachi River flowing through Minami-Furano, this area lets you choose from several rivers, including the Chubetsu and Mu. Many operators offer everything from a gentle course for children as young as 3–4, to advanced whitewater courses, and the area also benefits from good access from Asahikawa Airport.

Tokachi (Shintoku / Obihiro Area)

Rafting on the Tokachi River, one of Hokkaido's major rivers. Tours mainly run around the Karikachi Highlands in Shintoku, with a roughly 2-hour short course available, plus a kids' plan where you ride along without needing to paddle. From central Obihiro, New Chitose Airport, or Sapporo, a private charter taxi can take you to the Shintoku/Obihiro area.

Sapporo / Jozankei

Some operators now run rafting tours close to central Jozankei, the hot spring town within Sapporo. The great access from the city makes this a good fit if you'd like an easy day trip.

Most operators start their season in late April or May, once the heaviest snowmelt has passed, and run through mid-to-late October. Midsummer (July–August) offers the most stable water levels and temperatures, making it the easiest time for families. Spring and autumn water is colder, so it's worth choosing an operator that provides a dry suit and wet socks.

Time of YearWhat to Expect
Late April–MayHigher water from snowmelt — best for those seeking advanced rapids
June–SeptemberStable water level and temperature — the best season for families and beginners
Early–mid OctoberCan be paired with autumn foliage, but water is colder, so dress warmly

Pricing varies by area, duration, and course content, but the standard range is roughly ¥5,000–8,700 per adult. For a fully private tour with your own boat, some operators charge around ¥36,000–42,000 per boat. The short Tokachi River course (about 2 hours) starts from a more affordable ¥5,000 or so.

* Prices change, so please check each operator's official website for the latest information.

Before you set off, a guide will cover paddling technique and safety, and an experienced guide accompanies you throughout the tour, so first-timers can join with confidence. Most operators rent the full set of gear — wetsuit, life jacket, helmet, and paddle.

Age requirements vary by area and course, but some operators offer gentle, family-friendly courses for children as young as 3–4. Others set requirements such as a minimum height of 110cm or elementary-school age, so always confirm age and height limits before booking.

Choosing a fully private tour means you won't share the boat with another group — a nice option for families with young children.

  • A swimsuit (or quick-dry clothing you don't mind getting wet)
  • A towel and a full change of clothes
  • Water-friendly sport sandals or marine shoes (some operators rent these)
  • Sunscreen and a hat (in summer)
  • Wetsuits, dry suits, life jackets, and helmets are generally included in the rental
