Mt. Rishiri, nicknamed “Rishiri Fuji” for its beautifully symmetrical cone shape, high-grade kelp and sea urchin from the surrounding waters, and the untouched wilderness of Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park. An island getaway at Hokkaido’s northernmost edge, reached by ferry from Wakkanai.
Rishiri Island floats in the Sea of Japan at Hokkaido’s northernmost edge. Centered on the island’s symbol, Mt. Rishiri, it’s an area where rich nature and ocean bounty come together in a compact package. As part of Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park, its untouched wilderness still remains today, drawing many visitors in summer for hiking and its famous seafood.

Rishiri Kelp & Sea Urchin
GourmetRishiri is famous nationwide as a kelp-producing region, and “Rishiri kombu” is known as a premium product. Sea urchin and scallops are also local specialties, with Rishiri-caught sea urchin in particular prized for its rich flavor. Many visitors come in summer specifically for a bowl of uni-don (sea urchin rice bowl).

Himenuma & Otatomari Ponds
Scenic ViewHimenuma Pond, which reflects Mt. Rishiri on its still surface, is a peaceful spot with a well-maintained walking path. Otatomari Pond, the largest on the island, is known for its grand view with Rishiri Fuji as a backdrop—both are perfect for a relaxing stroll in nature.

Getting to the Island
AccessRishiri Island is reached by ferry from Wakkanai Port on the Hokkaido mainland, a trip of about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours. Flying into Rishiri Airport is also an option. The island is busiest during summer (June to September), when many visitors come for hiking and seafood.
