Hokkaido Cheese & Butter Making | Best Farms & Workshops

Made with fresh milk, cheese and butter making is a natural fit for Hokkaido, Japan's dairy heartland. From Tokachi's Hanabatake Farm to family-friendly shake-your-own butter workshops, these hands-on experiences make for a memorable part of your trip.

"Shake butter making," where you turn fresh cream into butter by shaking it in a bottle, is a popular activity simple enough for kids to try. Some workshops also offer a more involved fresh cheese-making program, letting you enjoy the flavor of something made just moments before.

Hanabatake Farm (Nakasatsunai, Tokachi)

A tourist farm known for its soft caramel candy. You can tour the cheese and caramel workshop and enjoy cheese-focused dining on-site (typically open mid-April to late October, closed in winter).

花畑牧場 Moto-satsunai Higashi 4-sen, Nakasatsunai, Kasai District, Hokkaido 089-1372. Cheese & caramel workshop tour

Country Farmers Fujita Farm (Shikaoi, Tokachi)

Combine a milking experience with a shake-your-own butter session. Using a portion of the milk you milked yourself is a nice touch that makes the experience feel special.

Heidi Farm (Naganuma)

Close to New Chitose Airport and Sapporo, Heidi Farm lets you combine several hands-on experiences, including butter making and ice cream making.

ハイジ牧場 Higashi 9-sen Minami 2-ban, Naganuma, Yubari District, Hokkaido

Most farms operate from late April through around October. A combined milking-and-butter-making plan typically runs around ¥3,500 per adult.

Shake butter making is as simple as shaking a bottle, so even young children can give it a try. It makes a great hands-on activity for the whole family to enjoy together.

Heidi Farm is conveniently close to New Chitose Airport and Sapporo, making it easy as a day trip. Hanabatake Farm and Fujita Farm in Tokachi involve more travel time, so it's best to pair them with other sightseeing in the Tokachi area. See our Hokkaido Ranch Experience Guide for detailed access information.
