From June through September, around 300 species of alpine plants bloom across Rebun Island. A defining feature is that many can be seen even at low elevation, so the whole island fills with vivid color. With many flowers found only on Rebun, such as the Rebun lady’s slipper orchid and Rebun edelweiss, this season is a dream for flower lovers.

An observatory overlooking the distinctively shaped “Momoiwa” (Peach Rock) rising from the Sea of Japan, along with the “Momoiwa Trail” leading up to it—Rebun Island’s most popular trekking route. Flowers bloom along the trail, letting you hike while taking in stunning views.

A cape at Rebun Island’s northernmost tip. This scenic spot features windswept, rugged seas, and on clear days you can sometimes see Sakhalin in the distance. The contrast between the vast ocean and the steep cliffs makes a striking impression.

📍 About a 40-minute drive from Kafuka Port

At 490 meters, Mt. Rebun is the island’s highest peak and a relatively accessible climb, with summit views taking in the whole island, the Sea of Japan, and neighboring Rishiri Island. Cape Gorota, in the island’s south, is known for its grand landscape of towering cliffs meeting the sea—a great hiking spot for enjoying the contrast between flowers and ocean.

Rebun Island’s most famous specialty is its rich, notably sweet “Rebun sea urchin.” Enjoyed as uni-don or sashimi during the summer season, it draws many visitors who come specifically for it. Kelp and scallops are also island specialties.

Like Rishiri Island, Rebun is reached by ferry from Wakkanai Port. The peak tourist season runs from June to September, when the flowers are in full bloom, drawing many trekkers and flower enthusiasts.
