Hokkaido Horse Riding | Ranches in Hidaka, Tokachi & Noboribetsu

From Hidaka, one of Japan's premier horse-breeding regions, to trail rides through Tokachi's sweeping landscapes, to a Noboribetsu ranch overlooking the Pacific, Hokkaido has horse-riding spots scattered across the island. This guide covers what makes each area unique, typical pricing, requirements for children, and how to get there.

Centered on Hidaka, known as a hub for breeding racehorses, Hokkaido has a deep-rooted horse-riding culture. You'll find everything from simple led-horse walks inside a paddock to full trail rides through forests and along the coast, suited to whatever experience level you're at.

Some routes, like Tokachi's Poroshiri Nature Park, let you ride through sweeping scenery with views of the Hidaka Mountains — a great way to take in Hokkaido's landscape while in the saddle.

Hidaka

Known as one of Japan's leading horse-breeding regions, Hidaka offers trail rides along the coast and through forests. Programs here place a strong emphasis on bonding with the horse, so they're enjoyable even if you don't know much about horses.

Tokachi

At spots like Poroshiri Nature Park, trail rides through views of the majestic Hidaka Mountains are popular. Courses are typically offered in a choice of lengths, from 30 to 60 minutes.

Noboribetsu

About a 10-minute drive from Noboribetsu Onsen, a ranch here lets you ride across sprawling grounds with views over the Pacific Ocean. Some ranches even allow beginners or solo riders out on the open trail, and you can also interact with sheep and ponies.

Near Sapporo / Tomakomai

Around Mt. Hakken, close to central Sapporo, you can try a proper Western-style riding experience. And at Northern Horse Park, about 15 minutes by car from New Chitose Airport, there are plenty of options even young children with no riding experience can enjoy, including sightseeing carriage rides and led-horse experiences.

Many ranches operate year-round, but outdoor trail riding mainly runs April through November, outside the snowy months. Summer's mild daytime temperatures make it especially good for a scenic trail ride.

Time of YearWhat to Expect
April–JuneFresh greenery after the snow melts
July–SeptemberStable weather — ideal for outdoor trail riding
October–NovemberAutumn foliage season. Mornings and evenings turn cold, so dress warmly

A led-horse experience within a paddock typically runs ¥9,000–13,000 per adult. Full trail rides vary in price depending on your experience level and the length of the route. Led-horse experiences at a sightseeing facility like Northern Horse Park are more affordable.

* Prices change, so please check each facility's official website for the latest information.

Most ranches offer a beginner-friendly led-horse experience, where staff hold the reins, or a practice course within a paddock. Full trail rides are sometimes limited to riders with prior experience, so it's worth checking in advance.

Age requirements vary by ranch — some set a minimum of age 10 and height of 140cm, while others, like Northern Horse Park, offer led-horse and hands-on experiences that even young children can enjoy. If you're visiting as a family, check in advance whether there's a program suited to your child's age and height.

  • Comfortable long pants (denim or similar fabric that won't chafe is recommended)
  • Closed shoes with a heel (many facilities don't allow sandals or high heels)
  • A hat and sunscreen (summer), warm layers (mornings, evenings, and autumn onward)
  • Helmets and riding gear are generally available to rent on-site
