TOMAMU

Seas of Clouds and a Village of Ice
Tomamu, a Resort in the Heart of Hokkaido

From spring to autumn, catch the sea of clouds at dawn from the Unkai Terrace; in winter, enjoy powder-snow slopes and the Ice Village made entirely of ice. Discover Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, set at the foot of the Hidaka Mountains in the center of Hokkaido, season by season.

Tomamu is a resort area in Shimukappu Village, almost at the very center of Hokkaido. Centered on Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, which brings hotels, ski slopes, restaurants and activities together across a vast site, it’s a place to enjoy a stay in any season. About 1.5 hours by car from New Chitose Airport, it’s an easy-to-reach and popular base for family trips and ski holidays.

A large-scale resort built around its tower hotels, with slopes, pools, restaurants and activities all in one area. Shuttle buses connect the resort, and plenty of indoor facilities make it easy to enjoy whatever the weather—ideal for families with young children.

Unkai Terrace

Scenic View

Ride the gondola up near the summit and look out over a sea of clouds spreading below you. It mainly operates in the early morning from spring to autumn, and whether the clouds appear depends on the weather and conditions that day. It can feel chilly on the mountain even in summer, so bring an extra layer.

3

Ice Village

Winter Only

A magical village of ice and snow that appears only in winter. Ice domes line the paths, and you can enjoy experiences only Tomamu’s harsh cold makes possible, such as an ice bar and an ice rink. At night it’s lit up, taking on a completely different atmosphere from the daytime.

Tomamu is one of the coldest places in Hokkaido, and winter nights can drop below −20°C (−4°F). When walking around the Ice Village, proper cold-weather gear—thick gloves, a hat and shoes that grip on snowy ground—is essential. For tips on choosing them, see our guide How to Stay Warm on a Hokkaido Winter Trip.

Tomamu Ski Area

Winter Activity

With runs up to 4,200m long, this ski area suits everyone from beginners to families to advanced skiers. Its light powder snow, created by the inland cold of central Hokkaido, is a major draw, and there are well-equipped kids’ areas and ski schools. To compare it with Niseko, Rusutsu and other resorts, see our Hokkaido Ski Resort Guide.

5

Mina-Mina Beach

Family

One of Japan’s largest indoor wave pools. Kept warm all year round, it’s a huge hit with kids even in the snowy season, and a great option for a bad-weather day.

Church on the Water

Architecture

A chapel designed by architect Tadao Ando. A cross standing in the water and the surrounding forest, which changes with every season, come together in a quiet, beautiful space. As it’s used as a wedding venue, visiting days and times are limited.

A Private Charter Taxi Is the Easy Way to Reach Tomamu

Tomamu is about 1.5 hours by car from New Chitose Airport. In winter the drive runs along snowy mountain roads, and many visitors feel uneasy taking a rental car.
Even with ski gear and plenty of family luggage, a private charter taxi with a driver experienced on winter roads takes you from the airport to the resort with no transfers.
